You’ve set your goals for 2026.
(What happened to 2025?! Last time I blinked, it was still summer.)
That was the easy part.
Now the hard part comes. Actually delivering on your goals.
Typically, you start with fresh energy and great ambition. And then reality happens, and you’re off track. Maybe just a bit. Maybe you’re off the charts.
How come? It could be a million reasons. Conversion rates drop a bit. You had a stockout. A supplier changed their shipping routes.
Or worse, you don’t know where you’re off.
The plan and budget that you made start to fade into the distant past and start to collect digital dust rather than actually helping you.
Your #1 FP&A fix this year
Schedule a monthly Budget vs Actuals review. And treat it as a decision meeting, not a reporting meeting.
Look for where things are different than your budget (and trust me, they will!). Where is revenue higher/lower than expected? Where are costs higher/lower than expected? Why did cash come in or go out faster than expected?
The point here isn’t to prove the plan was right. The point is that you dive into the root causes and get to know your own business even better. That you learn from the differences, and iterate. And iterate again. So that by the end of the year, your plans will be much more reliable. This discipline is what separates predictable growth from guess-and-react management.
